A Bit About Me
Jawad Freites
Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
Hi, I’m Joe, an established NHS Consultant specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
I began my postgraduate specialty training in York in 2007, obtained my MRCOG in 2012, completed training in 2014, and was appointed to my current role that same year. I work across York, Malton, and Scarborough hospitals.
During training, I developed a particular interest in benign gynaecology and the impact of pelvic floor disorders on women’s quality of life. While developing my skills in abdominal surgery, both minimally invasive and open techniques, I found my true passion lay in managing pelvic floor dysfunction. To enhance my expertise, particularly in the treatment of complex pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, I completed an advanced training module in Urogynaecology and vaginal surgery at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Over the last decade, I have continued to grow this subspecialist interest through clinical practice and research. I currently serve as the Urogynaecology Lead for the Trust. In this role, I co-chair the Pelvic Floor Multidisciplinary Team, working closely with urologists, colorectal surgeons, radiologists, specialist nurses, pelvic floor physiotherapists, and a dedicated pain management team. Together, we provide tailored care pathways designed around each patient’s specific needs, a philosophy I am deeply committed to.
I also play an active role in medical education. As a trainer and educational supervisor, I support resident doctors at various stages of their careers and mentor newly appointed consultants as they transition into their roles. I believe in fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and excellence within our growing department.
Alongside my NHS work, I offer private consultations and treatment at Nuffield Health Hospital in York, providing care for a wide range of gynaecological conditions with a particular focus on pelvic floor health and minimally invasive treatments. My approach is calm, supportive, and centred around each woman’s individual needs. I believe that listening carefully and explaining clearly are just as important as clinical expertise.
Outside of clinical practice, I enjoy spending time with my young family. Watching my two children grow is a fast paced and joyful adventure, and we enjoy being active and outdoors together.
I am also a long time endurance cyclist and serve on the committee at Clifton Cycling Club in York. I have proudly represented the club in various charity events, including the Fred Whitton Challenge in the Lake District, an event that has raised millions for charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support.
In 2020, I sustained a serious cycling injury that led to a long recovery, including 18 months wearing an Ilizarov frame on my left leg. This experience gave me a powerful perspective on healthcare from the patient’s side. It was humbling, and it strengthened my appreciation for the challenges patients face, the importance of compassionate care, and the value of quality of life outcomes.
As part of my recovery, I discovered a love for weight training, which has helped me rebuild strength, regain mobility, and quite literally get back on my feet. I remain incredibly grateful for the outstanding care I received and carry those lessons with me every day in my clinical practice.
